Last week, I finally hit record on my YouTube channel — and let’s just say, things didn’t exactly go to plan. Between forgotten lines, lighting hiccups, and way too many takes, it was a reminder that starting isn’t always smooth… but it’s always worth it.
I will just give an overview of the process, and then I will end with some tips and equipment I used.
Renting A Space to Film YouTube Videos
I had a short photoshoot with a client on Friday afternoon. And if you know me at all, you may have seen that I had a baby. When I have meetings or photoshoots, I have to get a babysitter for the little one. Since I had my mom watching Mikai already for the shoot, I decided to book a few hours for myself to film for YouTube!
My thought was, “If I pay for it, I will actually film them…” And, I did, so that thought process worked! Yay!
TIP #1: If you feel like you never have time to create content, book an appointment with yourself. Literally, block it off in your calendar. Consider actually renting space like I did.
The space I rented was Onyx and Opal Events in Oxford, AL. I love the space because it is open and allows for whatever setup you need. I had the owner, Weston, set up a couch for me at the front near the large floor-to-ceiling windows. The setup was minimal but great, and I was ready to film!
When Things Go Wrong Filming YouTube Videos
A few things did not go as planned, but I made the best of it, and hopefully, the videos will look okay on my page! *fingers crossed*
- The air conditioning was a little loud (not for normal events, but for filming a video, it was), so I had to turn the air off while I filmed. I am very hot-natured, so that is not ideal at all.
- I recorded my first “Welcome to the Garden” video. I watched it back. The mic I was wearing did not work. I had to re-record it.
- I forgot to put on my glasses and lipstick, which was just something I wanted to do in all the videos on the page. So, I am annoyed I forgot.
- The space has floor-to-ceiling windows that allow for amazing natural light… unless it is storming and flash flooding. Literally, I got notified that Calhoun County got put under a flash flood warning while I was filming. Needless to say, the video may be slightly darker than I anticipated (please like the video anyway).
TIP #2: When things don’t go exactly as you planned, just breathe and always book the space for double the amount of time you *think* you need it for. Filming videos simply takes way longer than I thought they would.
TIP #3: Always watch your content back in real time to make sure the audio works!

What to Look Forward to on The Brand Garden YouTube Page
My plan is to post weekly videos where I’ll be breaking down branding and marketing in a way that feels clear, simple, and doable. Think of it as a place where you can come for ideas, strategy, and a little creative inspiration to keep your business growing without the overwhelm. I’d love to make sure the content is truly helpful for you, so if there’s a topic you’d like me to cover, just send me an email or comment on this blog post—I’d be so excited to hear your suggestions.
