My Typical Day as a Business Owning Mom

back to blog

Hi friends. Me again. I have decided to structure my blog a little differently and see how it goes…

Typically, businesses write blogs with tips to help you do better or gain insight on something. While I LOVE teaching and helping others, I feel like that way of writing has grown stale and is probably fading into the noise.

So, here I am changing things up. Yay. At least I hope so.

I am going to start blogging about my “experience.” And how it is going as a business owner.

I remember when I was pregnant (that sounds like it was forever ago… it was only a few months ago). I wanted to hear what it was like to be a soon-to-be mom AND a business owner. It was VERY hard to find anyone talking about that or how they planned their maternity leave.

Luckily, I found Elizabeth McCravy’s podcast, Breakthrough Brand Podcast. She teaches very valuable insights for business owners, but also talks about her personal journey of having children! So, I binged ALL her podcasts about planning her maternity leave and how she structures her days with a little one. It gave me hope I could do it, too.

And here I am… doing it!

My Typical Day

Waking Up

So, a typical day for me as a new mom and business owner is waking up about 5 or 6. If baby girl is stirring, I go ahead and warm up a bottle because I know she will be up screaming for food!

After all the baby things, bottle, diapers, etc., I TRY to do something in the garden or around the house during her first nap. If I put house things off until the end of the day, I often will say, “I’ll do it tomorrow.” Which then ends up happening every day, and it doesn’t get done. IFYKYK.

After that, I check my todos in Clickup for the day and get after it. I am actually writing this during her morning nap!

Mid-Morning

She often wakes up around 9 or 10 from her nap. And again, I try to have a bottle ready before she wakes up. After feeding, we babble together and do a little tummy time.

Have to hit those milestones, right?

While she is winding down, I get back to work. I am usually on my laptop with her while she is going to sleep. She likes to see me!

The next nap window is my time to start working on someone’s social media. This nap is sometimes shorter, so I have to get to it!

Afternoon

She is waking again, and it’s time for all the baby things. It often feels repetitive, but that’s okay! Have to take care of baby girl.

After some more tummy time, she does her third nap of the day, and often this one is LONG. It’s all that I can hope for, to be honest.

When you are working on creative things, it is nice to have a long stint of time to work rather than like mini sessions, in my opinion.

During this time, I will continue to work on social media for clients or dive into something that takes a little more time and focus, like websites or logos.

Oh, I also try to prep dinner if needed during this time.

Evening

Bryan typically comes home at some point in the early evening. He gets Mikai from me and spends time with her. I use this time to finish up any work I need to, knock out a task on my home to-do list, and start dinner!

I am also taking counseling classes, so I try to do a little learning in the evenings and spend time with Bryan and Mikai.

Tips for a Productive Day as a Mom Business Owner

  • Have a plan
  • Only schedule one main thing to do that day for work
    • You really never know how the day will go. It may take you all day to get one task done, depending on how your child is feeling that day. If I can get more than one done, cool. But, if not, then I don’t feel “unproductive.”
  • Have a few side things you could do on your phone
    • Sometimes, she may not want to lie down and just wants to be held. And sometimes I just want to hold her! I have things to do on my phone like reading emails, scheduling posts, or even creating some reels in CapCut for my own Instagram.
  • Plan your dinners for the week, not the night of
    • One thing that helps me get more work done during the week is having my dinners planned ahead of time. I buy all the groceries for the week during the weekend. I plan days to do crock pot meals to give me a break from cooking, so I can do other things in their place.
  • Utilize your family when you can
    • Bryan spends time with her in the evening which frees me up to get a few tasks done.
    • I also have help from family members when I need someone to watch her during shoots or meetings.

Rocking the Mom Business Owner Thing

This ended up being quite a long blog. Hopefully, you enjoyed reading it and got some tips from it if you are a new mom or considering having a baby while also running a business. I was super nervous about still being able to do work, and I hope this is encouraging to you. You can do it. You may not be able to get as much work done, but it is possible to do both!

Just understand you may have to pivot and do things differently, and that’s okay! Look out for another blog soon about how I have pivoted in the business.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on how you navigate life and business. Leave me a comment below.
